There are some very interesting differences I am finding in the culture here and that of America.
Every day, when I leave my house, I bring a water bottle with me. There are fountains (like the picture)from which everyone (including foreigners who aren't used to the water) can fill up their water bottles. I have done so many times now. The crystal clear water comes from the lake (the lake which I swam in just earlier today). Can you imagine that happening in America, ever? People just drinking water from a public fountain? I don't think we could handle it.
That's the biggest difference.
While I was at the beach today, however, I did happen to see, mmm, probably five women without their tops on? And a bunch of children just running around in their underwear. Again, not something we Americans could probably handle. That's not really just Annecy, though, but all of France.
Another interesting tidbit; while shopping in the veille ville (old city), I heard Forget You (Ceelo Green), The Middle, and even Manic Monday playing over the radio at various times. I'm seriously curious as to why French radios do not play French music: surely there are some French singers that are popular? J'n sais pas.
Finally, I am finding that I know very little about the world in general. I have met people from many different countries here in Annecy and know very little about their countries (even sometimes where those countries are or what language they speak), and it is making me all the more curious and inspired to travel. I cannot wait to go to a million different places. I want to go now!
Anyway, those are just some interesting little tidbits of what is happening here.
My sister was talking about the music thing, too. Her host mother really liked the song "Big Girls You are Beautiful" by Mika, but she had no idea what it was about. She just thought it sounded nice.
ReplyDeleteAnd a lot of French bands go American as soon as they get big, ex: Daft Punk, Phoenix
